Mineral Specimen #9    Barite, Hematite

Montreal Mine, Iron County, Minnesota

This specimen is from a classic location. The Montreal Mine was opened in the late 1800s and closed in 1963. According to the website for the city of Montreal, it was the world's deepest Iron Mine at 4337 feet. The specimen is composed almost completely of Barite with some Hematite. The coloration is due to the Hematite. Many of the crystals are broken on the ends which is often common with many finely bladed Barite specimens. It is still very attractive and has good luster. The specimen weighs 6 lbs. (appx. 2.7 kg). Ex. Don "Doc" Langham collection (see Collections information). Below are pictures showing different sides and some closeups of some vugs.
