Mineral Specimen #87    Copper inclusions in Calcite

Franklin Mine, Quincy Hill, Houghton County, Michigan, USA

This is a classic Michigan Copper country mineral combination. The Calcite is very clear allowing for good visibility of the Copper. Some of the Copper also extends past the exterior of the Calcite crystal. Where it does, the copper is tarnished; yet in the interior, the Copper is bright and shiny. The Franklin is an old mine which was adjacent to the Quincy Mine. The owners of the Quincy bought all the land surrounding the Franklin. When the reserves in the Franklin were mined out, it was forced to close because the workings could not be extended. Later, the Quincy purchased the property where the Franklin was. This specimen is in good condition. There is some abrasion on the crystal edge on one side of the specimen. On the other side, the edges are in excellent condition (see the first picture). Since this specimen is thumbnail size, if displayed with this side showing, one has an excellent thumbnail specimen.
