Mineral Specimen #825 Demantoid variety of Andradite Garnet
Franscia Mine, Campo Franscia, Lanterna Valley, Malenco Valley, Sondrio Province, Lombardy, Italy
This is a very nice specimen of gemmy Demantoid crystals from a classic Italian alpine location. The color is apple green and the crystals are in good condition. The bottom of the specimen has been sawed. The white to cream colored material around the bases of the garnets is very likely Artinite (it is fibrous under a 10x loupe). Not only is Artinite found at the location but it is the type location for Artinite (see the 5th and 6th pictures). Another curiosity, is the very small crude crystals found in two places on the side of the specimen. These are a much brighter green color than the other garnet crystals. The color and size are consistent with Uvarovite crystals which have been found at the location.
