Mineral Specimen #63 Rhodochrosite included Selenite (Gypsum)
American Tunnel, Silverton District, San Juan County, Colorado, USA
This is a real rarity. I have been seeing Rhodochrosites from the American Tunnel since I was a kid (and watched the prices steadily climb). This is the first specimen I have seen with Selenite. And to make it even better, some of the Rhodochrosite is included in the Selenite. Since part of Selenite is clear, the Rhodochrosite is visible inside the Selenite. Admittedly, the Rhodochrosite crystals are for the most part cleaved, but, there are pockets of complete crystals, especially where included in the Selenite. The Selenite has some internal cleaves which pick up the pink color from the Rhodochrosite and give it a pink tint. There are also small Quartz crystals, including one 1mm scepter I found with a 10x loupe. There is also Pyrite and other Sulfides in the matrix.
