Mineral Specimen #6381    Gjerdingenite-Fe

Gjerdingselva (Gjerdingen), Nordmarka, Lunner, Oppland, Norway

Type Location

6.3 x 4.4 x 2.6 cm

Ex. Wolfgang Henkel

K2Fe2+(Nb,Ti)4(Si4O12)2(O,OH)4 · 6H2O

Small crude, orange colored crystals of Gjerdingenite in a white matrix with additional, small black crystals. None of the Gjerdingenite crystals are complete. There are two species of Gjerdingenite found at the location which are indistinguishable without analysis. Since Gjerdingenite-Fe is much more common at the location than Gjerdingerite-Mn, I have taken the liberty of listing the specimen as Gjerdingenite-Fe. Only Gjerdingenite was written on a piece of masking tape Wolfgang Henkel had taped to the top of the plastic box in which the specimens was stored. Unfortunately, the tape was in quite bad condition and was not salvageable. The white matrix is likely Albite.

Condition: Composed of massive material.

Flaws: Essentially massive material.
