Mineral Specimen #6280    Bitumen and micro Pyrite Crystals on Dolomite Crystals

Alpena Co., Michigan (likely Paxton Quarry)

11.9 x 9.4 x 5 cm

Sold

Black colored sphericules with a high glossy luster of Bitumen have formed on small Dolomite crystals. There are also very small, cubic, micro crystals of Pyrite perched on the Dolomite crystals. This are so small, that magnification is needed to see them. The specimen was listed as being from Alpena. There are a number of large limestone quarries around Alpena which is a large tourist town due to its beaches on Lake Michigan. The Dolomite looks very much like other specimens I have seen from the Paxton Quarry which has long been closed and is now reclaimed and used as a park.

Condition: Good

Flaws: Some minor bruising of the Dolomite crystals.
