Mineral Specimen #6203    Stalactic Barite Crystals with Micro Iron Sulfide Crystals

Barnett Mine, Rosiclare area, Rosiclare District, Pope Co., Illinois

5.5 x 1.4 x 1.1 cm

Sold

1964

Rectangular, off white colored Barite crystals have grown in an elongated stalactic shape. At one end of the specimen, a thin hollow tube can be seen. Apparently the Barite crystals grew upon a now dissolved, thin wire like mineral. The crystals are well formed with a glossy luster and in a variety of sizes. There are micro crystals of some type of sulfide on the surfaces of the Barite crystals. These are so small, that even under 10x, it is not possible to distinguish the crystal shape to determine the species. My conjecture would be Chalcopyrite but they could be Pyrite or Marcasite. From a location from which specimens are seldom available.

Condition: Very Good

Flaws: The end is incomplete.
