Mineral Specimen #5980    Shattuckite, Malachite, Ajoite, Quartz with Indluded Shattuckite on Quartz

Kaokoveld Plateau, Kunene Region, Namibia

7.1 x 4.8 x 2.6 cm

Sold

Shattuckite: Cu5(Si2O6)2(OH)2, Ajoite: (K,Na)Cu7AlSi9O24(OH)6·3H2O

Dark blue colored Shattuckite is present in two forms on this specimen. At one end of the specimen, the Shattuckite has grown as a layer of micro crystals. At the other end of the specimen, the Shattuckite is included, in flattened, Quartz crystals. There is also one small, but very nice, Quartz crystal with the classic Quartz habit which is a rich blue color with included Shattuckite. The vivid green Malachite and white Quartz make a good contrast to the Shattuckite as well as the light blue colored Ajoite. The Ajoite is present as a thin layer below the Shattuckite and Malachite and forms a edging around the two where exposed. The bottom of the specimen has been sawn.

Condition: Good

Flaws: At one end of the specimen, there is an area where the Quartz crystals with included Shattuckite are missing and the underlying, massive Quartz is present.
