Mineral Specimen #5441    Fluorite, Druze Calcite

May Quarry, Ft. Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana

9.2 x 7.9 x 4.8 cm
Largest crystal measures 1.4 cm on edge.

Sold

Collected by John Medici, circa 1970

For this location, this is a rather large specimen with multiple Fluorite crystals. Fluorite specimens from this location are hard to come by and are usually available as thumbnail size to minature sixed specimens. This specimen has cubic crystals of a light amber color which are very clear with a high, glassy luster. Although the May Quarry is currently a working quarry where Fluorite is still encountered, collecting is seldom allowed. I used to be a dealer at the Ft. Wayne show and was once shown a beatuful specimen with large, yellow colored crystals which was retrieved by a fellow who worked a front end loader at the quarry. When asked if he wished to sell the specimen, he said he could not do so because he could be fired. John told me he recently found the speicmen while rummaging through his basement and he had collected it over 45 years ago.

Condition: Fairly Good

Flaws: Most of the crystals have internal cleaves and several have either cleaved corners or edges.
