Mineral Specimen #5345    Quartz coated with Manganese and Iron Oxides

Diamond Hill Quartz Mine, Antreville, Abbeville Co., South Carolina

5.7 x 2 x 1.9 cm

Sold

Collected by Kirk Valuet

Small stubby Quartz crystals coated with a layer of black colored Manganese oxides with the exception of a few crystals at one end which are coated with red/brown colored iron oxides. The specimen was listed in Kirk's catalog as being coated with Pyrolusite. This is supported by mention in the description of one of the specimens posted on mindat. However, manganese oxides often occur as a mix of more than one discrete mineral. There is a small, curious, botryoidal growth of this material perched on top of the Quartz crystals.

Condition: Excellent

Flaws: Nothing Appreciable
