Mineral Specimen #5223    Quartz variety: Eisenkiesel on Kidney Ore Hematite

Gill Brow Iron Mine, Lindal Moor, Lindal in Furness, near Ulverston, Cumbria, England

A very nice specimen of Hematite with a botryoidal habit also known as Kidney ore which is partially covered with small, squat Quartz of the variety Eisenkessel which is German for Iron Crystal in reference to the red to brown color due to micro inclusions of Hematite. The color of these crystals is much darker in the middle with a thin perimeter of lighter and more reddish colored crystals. The Hematite varies in color from dark gray to maroon to a bright reddish color.

The specimen is from an old location worked in the later half of the 1800s and is not listed on Mindat which is surprising due to the English origins of the website . A google search revealed very little information, the best being a reference in the book, Steel: Its History, Manufacture, Properties, and Uses, written in 1880, on page 352. There is also some references in railway histories, a picture of the dumps on Flickr, a specimen which sold on erocks and one posted on Friends on Mineralogy.

Condition: Very Good

Flaws: Nothing Appreciable
