Mineral Specimen #5187 Enstatite variety: Hypersthene (Ferrian)
Mangabal I intrusion, Sanclerlandia, Goias, Brazil
4 x 3.6 x 0.8 cm
An interesting polished specimen of Hypersthene which has a maroon/purple color. The Hypersthene is layered which produces alternate light and dark banding. Perpendicular to these bands, the stone has chatoyant lines running the length of the specimen. This was from a deposit mined about 10 years ago from which Bronzeite was the more common form of Enstatite found. The Bronzite was also used as a lapidary material.
Condition: Fairly Good
Flaws: There are healed cracks. In places, coinciding with the layers, there are places which are recessed below the polished surface.
