Mineral Specimen #5164 Fire Agate
Slaughter Mountain, Lone Star District, Gila Mts, San Carlos Apache Reservation, Graham Co., Arizona
A Fire Agate cabochon which exhibits brilliant colors of green, red, gold and some purple. The cabochon has been masterfully cut and polished to reveal four cells of colors. This is a real art form because the agate needs to be polished to a depth deep enough to reveal the colors, but if polished down too far, the colors are lost. On this specimen, the agate was cut deeper in the middle with a resulting crease running in a curved diagonal across the middle. The polish is excellent. Although Fire Agate can found across the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, Slaughterhouse Mountain is perhaps the most famous location and is noted for the brilliance of colors. This is older material and was polished by an older gentleman who is a demonstrator at one of our local shows.
