Mineral Specimen #5145    Smoky Quartz, Orhoclase Coated with Hematite and Chlorite with Minor Pyrite

Sheahan Brothers Granite Quarry, Graniteville, Iron Co., Misssouri

A very rare, old Missouri pegmatite specimen with well formed Smoky Quartz and Orthoclase crystals from a quarry from which " Missouri Red " Granite was formally mined. The quarry was active during the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Although there is quite a bit granite southwest of St. Louis which in the past was widely quarried, well crystalized pegmatite specimens were seldom found with this quarry being the best known. The quarry is now flooded and since 1967 has been within Elephant Rocks State Park. Some of the surfaces of the specimen have a thin coating of reddish Hematite which in places has a secondary thin coating of gray/green colored Chlorite. There are also a few, small, striated, cubic Pyrite crystals present.'

Condition: Good

Flaws: There are some internalcracks in one of the Smoky Quartz crystals
