Mineral Specimen #5134    Limonite on Stalactic Druze Quartz

Washington Co., Missouri

late 1960s

This is an extremely good example of a druze Quartz specimen which can be found in one of the many old, abandoned pits where Barite was mined in Washington County which is just southwest of St. Louis. On this specimen, the Quartz has formed Stalactic growths which in turn have been coated with reddish brown colored Limonite; the color of which contrasts nicely with the white Quartz. On the sides of the specimen, it can be seen the Quartz has formed layers of Agate. At one time, druze specimens from this area were plentiful but the pits are now either flooded or off limits to collectors. This specimen was collected in the late 1960s. It was listed in the collection from which it came as being from the Dog Patch Mine. There is no reference to this name on either mindat or can be found with a Google search,.
