Mineral Specimen #497 Tetrahedrite with Quartz
Huancavelica Department, Peru
This is a rather large (and heavy) Tetrahedrite specimen. Crystals range in size from quite small to over 5 cm long. The larger crystals tend to have an overlayer of iridescent micro crystals which adds to the attractiveness of the specimen. From the color, one would assume this to be Chalcopyrite. On top of the Tetrahedrite, there are clusters of small, clear to white, Quartz crystals. The Tetrahedrite is growing on Sphalerite. On the bottom of the specimen, the Sphalerite is cleaved and reveals a reddish brown color and is gemmy. The bottom also has a large number of small Pyrite crystals, some of which have a reddish tarnish. The specimen does have some damage, but not extensive. Considering the size, it is in fairly good condition.
