Mineral Specimen #47 Potato Stone Agate
Dulcote Quarry, Wells, Somerset, England
This specimen is microcrystalline Quartz colored with Hematite. The specimen has been highly polished. Potato Stone is what the local farmer's call these stones when they are uncovered when they plow. The name comes from their resemblance to potatoes. Amazingly, very similar agates are found in the gravel pits around my house and even occasionally in our yard. They are locally called Michigan agates or Michigan oolitic agates. The area around me is a large glacial moraine, and I have never heard of their original source.
