Mineral Specimen #4791    Asbestos (likely Chrysotile), Serpentine

Dawson, DeKalb Co., Alabama

7.6 x 5.3 x 4.6 cm

Sold

This specimen consists of alternating layers of green colored massive Serpentine and asbestos form Serpentine which varies in color from light green to a light gold/green. At first, I thought this was a specimen from Quebec, but then found the writing on one end of the specimen which gave the location as Dawson, Alabama. There is no reference on mindat to the location, nor either Asbestos or Chrysotile from Alabama (although there are several locations listed for Serpentine from Alabama). However, there is an old USGS paper which mentions 9 occurrences of Asbestos from Alabama and 10 prospects from around 1900. So, this appears to be quite a rare location specimen.

Condition: Good

Flaws: Essentially massive material.
