Mineral Specimen #4448    Ruby Jack Sphalerite on Dolomite, Black Sphalerite, Galena

Tri State District, Joplin, Missouri

6.7 x 5 x 4.8 cm
2.6 x 2 x 1.9 in

Sold

Ex. A. Neely, 1960s

Small gemmy, red brown colored Rubyjack Sphalerite crystals contrast nicely with the pink colored Dolomite upon which they rest. The Dolomite is in a thin (approximately 1 cm thick), double sided layer with Rubyjack, Dolomite and Galena crystals on both sides. The Dolomite rests on a much larger Sphalerite crystal which is a dark brown, almost black, color. Although this is a specimen which can rest on various sides and still be a presentable specimen, it is particularly nice when the Dolomite is on the top as in the first few photos. In this position, the Dolomite rests at a jaunty angle which is aesthetically attractive. On the reverse side of the specimen from the layer of Dolomite, there are larger cubic Galena crystals and a patch of Dolomite crystals with more Rubyjack crystals which are larger in size.

Condition: Fairly Good

Flaws: There are areas of bruising on the Sphalerite more noticable on the larger, darker colored crystal. A few of the Rubyjack crystals are also bruised. On the larger Galena crystals, the surfaces are dulled somewhat by an coating of tarnish. Also, the edges and corners of the some of the larger Galena crystals is slightly worn.
