Mineral Specimen #4185    Azurite, Malachite

Old Copper Mines near Aroa, Bolivar, Yaracuy, Venezuala

Ex. Charles M. Noll Collection

This specimen is from a very old copper mining district which is not even listed on mindat but described in the Spanish version of Wikipedia. The mines were started in the Spanish colonial period, later bought by a British firm and shut down at the beginning of the 20th century. This specimen consists of fibrous aggregates of Malachite and blocky dark blue Azurite crystals resting on a massive dark gray matrix. Since the specimen is quite heavy and dense, this matrix is likely a copper oxide, possibly Cuprite or Tenorite. The specimen is in very good condition with no appreciable damage.
