Mineral Specimen #385 Etched Fluorite Crystal
Clay Center, Ottawa County, Ohio
Fluorescent LW & SW; Phosphorescent SW
This Fluorite specimen has a peculiar etched habit. This came from an old collection I bought this fall right in my home town. There were a number of these wrapped in newspapers which were completely disintegrating and were probably self-collected by the former now deceased owners. I have spoken with two Ohio mineral dealers who have extensive Ohio collections. Neither had a good explanation of how these crystals formed (one even asked me to save him a specimen). Both said these were older specimens, my best guess would be they were collected in the 1970s. The specimen is very fluorescent under both LW and SW and phosphorescent under SW. The color is the typical creamy yellow color seen for midwestern Fluorites which I have attempted to capture in the last photo which was made under SW. The only problem with the specimen is that is a bit crumbly. Not horribly so, but tiny crumbs fall off when handled; it should ship fine.
