Mineral Specimen #3694 Celestine and Calcite
Mojina Mine, Rancho de Mojina, Ricardo Flores Magon, Mun. de Buenaventura, Chihuahua, Mexico
Intermixed white to off white colored Calcite with blue colored Celestine. In the past, these specimens were labeled as being Aragonite as opposed to Calcite. Once, about 15 years ago, using a similar specimen, I etched away all of the Calcite with HCl. What was left, was a lattice work of thin platy blue Celestine crystals. Although very attractive and interesting, the remaining Celestine was so thin and fragile that it broke apart as soon as it was moved. It is apparent, the Calcite formed on the Celestine as a secondary growth. Under SW UV, the Calcite exhibits green color in places and a blue color in other places.
The specimen is in fairly good condition but there are a few areas where the Calcite is bruised.
7 x 3.9 x 3.5 cm
