Mineral Specimen #313 Garnet Grossular Andradite Series
Shap Blue Quarry, Shap, Eastern Fells, South Eastern Region (Westmorland), Cumbria, England
Ex. Carnegie Museum
This specimen was collected on Easter Sunday, April, 19th, 1965 from metamorphised Ordovician Andesite. Apparently, the reference to R. J. Firman referred to the following article he wrote:THE BORROWDALE VOLCANIC SERIES BETWEEN WASTWATER AND DUDDON VALLEY, CUMBERLAND in the Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society July 1957. Although a bit of an ugly black rock, one rarely sees Andradite/Grossular from the UK. This was an exceedingly hard specimen to photograph (as is often the case with black shiney minerals) until I noticed how good it looked with a light source from only one direction; still a bit ugly though. Sorry about the cotton fibers in the photos.
