Mineral Specimen #30 Selenite on Red Gypsum
Michigan Cold Storage, Wyoming, Kent Co., Michigan
This specimen consists of water clear Selenite crystals on Red Gypsum. Yes, it is actually orange, but red is what everyone in the Midwest calls it. According to the tour guide at the mine, it is the only place in the world where Gypsum occurs in this color. You can no longer obtain the clear Selenite crystals at the mine (that's a picture of me in my younger days attempting to find some). The last of the clear Selenite was collected in the early 1960s. The mine consists of 6 miles of tunnels and was actively mined for Gypsum in the early 1900s. About 1/4 of it has now been converted to cold storage for food. The floors have been paved, doors added, and huge refrigeration units installed. More than a railway car of food is moved in and out the mine each day (it has a very impressive elevator). Mineral clubs in the area are still allowed to do field trips in the mine. I do a local club show in a mall in Wyoming, Michigan which is practically above some of the tunnels.
