Mineral Specimen #2960    Two Generation Calcite (Aragonite on Calcite ?)

Tri State District, Joplin, Missouri

15.2 x 12.2 x 6.5 cm
6 x 4.8 x 2.6 in

Sold

Ex. A. E. Seaman Museum, Ex. Lance Hampel

This specimen consists of the termination of a large brown colored Calcite crystal which has around its termination a secondary growth of lighter colored Calcite with a different habit. This a rare form of Calcite from the Tri State mining district. The location is usually listed as being from Joplin, but this is catchall used when the exact mine is not known. In the past, specimens with this secondary growth have often been labeled as Aragonite on Calcite. I have had little luck search the internet for more information on whether the secondary material is either Calcite or Aragonite and as to the exact location. This is a particularly large example of this type of specimen. The back of the specimen is cleaved but the termination is complete. The darker Calcite has a bumpy surface which is rounded and appears to have been exposed to acid bearing water. The lighter colored material has a finely layered habit and does not show the rounding of the darker material. The specimen is in good condition. There is some very minor wear on some of the lighter material and there are some internal cleaves in the darker material.
