Mineral Specimen #22 Vesuvianite
Jeffrey quarry, Asbestos, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Quebec, Canada
This specimen exhibits a nicely contrasting color. This quarry is noted for these colors and produces some of the most beautiful Vesuvianite specimens in the world. According to a research paper published in the Canadian Minerologist (Vol.30, pp. 19-48 1992), the colors are attributable to the presence of iron and manganese along with low levels of Titanium. The iron is responsible for the green color and the manganese (along with a low iron level) is responsible for the pink/purple color. The specimen is in good condition. There is a small bruised section which is hard to see in person and virtually impossible to see in the photos. It is in the middle piciture near the single solitary purple spot in the front toward the left.
