Mineral Specimen #224    Fluorite

Mt. Antero, Chaffee County, Colorado

The collecting area on Mt. Antero is over 14,000 foot in elevation (4267 m) and is much better known for the Aquamarine crystals found there. This specimen exhibits sharp Ochtahedral crystals. Unfortunately, there is a thin coating of a white material (probably Quartz) on most of the faces which gives the crystals a frosted appearance which is a bit more promonced in real life compared to the photos. The faces without the coating reveal a nice rich purple color with some zoning. The specimen is also composed of Feldspar and Mica (neither of which I am certain of the species since more than one occurs at the location - it looks like Albite and Biotite).
