Mineral Specimen #217 Babingtonite

Lane Quarry, Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts

This is a classic location for Babingtonite. Babingtonite is the state mineral for Massachusetts (actually, legally they refer to themselves as a Commonwealth, even on my sales tax license).

The crystals on this specimen are well formed and damage free. The largest one is 9 mm in length. There are lots of small, snow white Calcite crystals which contrast nicely with the Babingtonite. When examining the Calcite crystrals, I found a very small single Chalcopyrite crystal which is known from the location but rare. The last picture will be posted to mindat since there are no pictures of Chalcopyrite currently posted from the location.

8.0 x 6.0 x 3.5 cm
