Mineral Specimen #20    Blue Fluorite with Purple edges with Sphalerite and Calcite

Cave-In-Rock, Hardin Co., Illinois

The color of this specimen is very difficult to capture in a photo. It is the beautiful blue only seen in Illinois Fluorite. Also, this specimen has a very thin layer of purple in the outer edges of the crystals. This specimen was mined prior to 1975. This is definitely different from the material seen in the late 80s and early 90s. The first picture captures the color best - but it still looks better in person (although incandescent light will wash out the blue - this is true of all the blue Illinois Fluourite - it used to be a pain to display these at shows - now with the new daylight CFLs that is no longer a problem). As far as damage, the specimen is in fair to good shape. There is some internal cleaving and some of the corners have small cleaves. There is a gouge in the crystal on the right. The specimen has not been treated with oil or WD-40 like so many Fluorite specimens (don't you hate it when you can hardly hold onto them - like most of the Rogerly Mine specimens).
