Mineral Specimen #2031    Smoky Herkimer Diamonds with Included Carbon

Ace of Diamonds Mine, Middleville, Town of Newport, Herkimer Co., New York, USA

Collected 1967

This specimen consists of one large Herkimer Diamond and three smaller crystals. This specimen is considerably more attractive in person than in the photos. The largest crystal is fairly transparent with some veils and internal factures which at one end yields quite a few internal rainbows. The surface of the main crystal which is furthest from the smaller crystals has a distinctive smoky layer (see the last picture). Two of the smaller crystals have black colored inclusions of carbon. The specimen is in good condition. With the exception of the internal flaws, the only other flaws are some minor wear and chipping in just a few places on the edges and corners. The original field collector was from Enfield, Connecticut but unfortunately I have lost his name.
