Mineral Specimen #189 Fluorescent Halite
Salton Sea, Imperial County, California, USA
This specimen consist of Halite crystals covering plant stems. Under SW, the specimen is highly fluorescent. Every specimen I have seen of this material comes from collections assembled in the 60s and 70s. The Salton Sea is a small salt lake in southern California. It is below sea level. The current Salton Sea was created by man by accidently when a canal overflowed it's banks and breached a dike in 1905. Ex. Alan Bohne collection. Please note: in the fluorescent photo, the specimen only fluoresces orange - the blue is reflection.
