Mineral Specimen #185 Chalcopyrite on Calcite

Brushy Creek Mine, Greeley, Viburnum Trend District, Reynolds County, Missouri, USA

This is a rather complex specimen. The Chalcopyrite is both on the Calcite crystals and also included in the Calcite elsewhere. In some places the Calcite is completely covered in Chalcopyrite. Apparently, there were two generations of Calcite. The first generation was covered with the Chalcopyrite. The second generation (a smoky gray color) usually grew parallel to the first; sometimes partially covering the first generation and sometimes completely covering it. Where it completely covered the first generation, phanthoms can be seen inside the crystal. The largest crystal is 4 cm long. Damage is minimal consisting of very minor abrasion on a couple of the edges. From the Steve Sarvis collection.
