Mineral Specimen #165 Mcfallite Ca2Mn3Si3O11(OH)3, Orientite Ca2MnMn2Si3O10(OH)4 and Calcite

Manganese Mine, Copper Harbor, Keweenaw County, Michigan Type Location

The Mcfallite is the reddish brown material and the Orientite is black. This is the type location for Mcfallite. The Manganese Mine operated between 1881 and 1883. Only about 1200 tons of material was extracted before it was determined the ore was unsuited for stell making. Today, the area is overgrown with heavy forest and finding specimen is pretty labor intensive (not to mention the perils of black flies, mosquitos, bears, and wolves when not covered with several feet of snow).
