Mineral Specimen #163 Sheet Copper
Caledonia mine, Ontonagon County, Michigan
Sheet copper forms in cracks between the host rock. Although hard to measure, it appears to be less than 1 mm thick (the third measurement reflects the curvature of the specimen). It is bendable by hand. Sheet copper is relatively rare. There is also a small amount of Epidote on the Copper (see the last picture). The specimen has been cleaned in HCl and perserved with a matte finish lacquer to perserve it's color. This specimen is so thin that even with such a large surface area, its total weight is only 46g (and Copper weighs almost 9 g/cc).
18 x 12.5 x 1 cm Appx. 1 mm thick
