Mineral Specimen #157 Copper included in Calcite with Prehnite
This is unusual specimen for two reasons. Calcite with Copper inclusions is not common from the Osceola Mine. Also, the combination of Calcite with included Copper and Prehnite is unusual from anywhere. The Calcite with Copper forms a ridge on the specimen. There is slight damage to the CaLCITE near the middle of the ridge on the side dominated by the Prehnite.
The Osceola Mine originally opened in 1873 was the one of the last Copper mines in the Keweenaw peninsula to close in 1968. There were a total of 11 shafts.
