Mineral Specimen #149 Datolite with included Copper
Quincy Mine, Quincy Hill, Houghton County, Michigan, USA
Datolite is famous from the Copper country of Michigan's Upper Pennisula. It usually occurs in porcelanous nodules. The most sort after specimens have been stained various colors by mineral traces and on rare occasion included Copper. This particular specimen is most unusual in that the Datolite is in situ in Basalt. The orange color is due to microscopic inclusions of Copper. Dendritic Copper extends from the Basalt into the Datolite. There is also green Epidote present. Both sides of the specimen have been polished and are represented in the following photographs. This is a very unique specimen.
