Mineral Specimen #142    Calcite Crystals in Fossil Clamshell (mercenaria permagna)

Rucks Pit, Fort Drum, Okeechobee County, Florida, USA

This interesting specimen formed when gemmy Calcite crystals grew in the interior of a fossil clamshell of the species mercenaria permagna. This specimen is completely hollow and has two windows on either side. The Calcite is a beautiful golden color with no damage. Some of the fossil matrix is still attached. This works as a perfect base for the specimen; it stands upright as photographed without any prop or stand.

9.5 x 8 x 4.5 cm
