Mineral Specimen #1327 Coquimbite, Voltaite and Szomolnokite
Mina Alcaparrosa, Cerritos Bayos, Calama, El Loa Province, Antofagasta Region, Chile
Fe2-xAlx(SO4)3·9H2O, x ~0.5, FeSO4·H2O and K2Fe2+5Fe3+3Al(SO4)12·18H2O
The Coquimbite is all of the purple crystals. The Voltaite is the dark material some of which is crude pyramidal crystals. The Szomolnokite is present as a light reddish brown to pinkish crust of micro crystals (at the front of the last picture). There is also present some bright yellow material and some white powdery material, both of which are unidentified. The specimen is in very good condition, especially the Coquimbite. The specimen is both light sensitive and sensitive to moisture in the air. It has been stored for many years in a tall plastic dome (the white base can be seen in some of the pictures) in the dark. I originally bought this and several other similar specimens from Dave Shannon in the mid 90s. George Katzmarek bought it from me a year later and now here it is again.
