Mineral Specimen #1287    Pyritohedral Pyrite with unknown Sulfide

Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Province, Huanuco Department, Peru

This Pyrite specimen has pyritohedral crystal faces on partial Pyrithedrons. A pyrithedron is an irregular dodecahedron (12 faces) composed of identical irregular pentagons. Both names are derived from the name for the mineral Pyrite. On this specimen, the faces are not identical (which is usually the case). There is one face which is very close to being a perfect pentagon. The specimen has a high luster. The faces have growth lines which are slightly curved and roughly parallel. There is one edge between faces which is beveled. There is quite a bit of very small, micro crystals of an unidentified sulfide which is a silver/gray metallic color. The specimen is in very good condition with no appreciable damage. Note: the specimen is relatively thin; the faces shown in the photos are the only ones present in this specimen.
