Mineral Specimen #1281 Binghamite with Silkstone, Goethite, and Hematite
Rabbit Lake mine, Cuyuna North Range, Crow Wing Co., Minnesota, USA
This is old lapidary material which is seldom seen today. The set of mines where it was found are just east of Duluth, Minnesota. This is a type of chlacedony which has included Hematite and/or Goethtite. In this specimen, there is a section of very red material. This red is considered the Binghamite. There is silkstone, but only on the edges of the white Chalcedony. The silkstone is a brown color and is of low quality on this specimen. Top grade silkstone can look very similar to Tigereye when polished. There is also shiney gray Hematite around the edges and a few places with micro crystals of Hematite and also some massive Goethite.
