Mineral Specimen #1220    Chocolate Opal Fossilized Plant Stem

Welo, Afar, Ethiopia

This Opal has a dark brown color with a white interior. The dark material is quite clear; the white is opaque. Both have a high luster. Flashes of fire can be found throughout the specimen and are more prominent in real life. The predominate color is red. There is also some green and an occasional flash of blue. There is an outer rind which shows green flashes in places and with a bark pattern visible in one place. There is a fair amount of crazing on the specimen. Similar specimens were previously erroneously described as fossilized bone.
