Mineral Specimen #106 Sphalerite
Commodore Mine, Amethyst Vein, Creede Mining District, Mineral County, Colorado
The Sphalerite is a group of translucent greenish amber crystals. There is also Chalcopyrite; some of which shows a natural iridescence. The specimen is in very good condition. The Creede mining district was a very productive producer of silver around the turn of the last century. The town was the epitomy of a Wild West town with shootings, gambling houses, bars, brothels and a few very rich miners (very few). At the time, the US goernment was propping up the price of silver. When this stopped, minining for the most part ceased.
