Mineral Specimen #5154 Hyaline Opal on Microcline with Smoky Quartz and Spessartine Garnet
Tongbei, Fujian, China
9.5 x 8 x 2.8 cm
3.7 x 3.1 x 1.1 in
Hyaline Opal of an unusual blue color has formed on this specimen. Although Hyaline Opal is found on a small percentage of specimens from Tongbei, this is the only specimen I have seen with this blue color (note: in 2007, when the mine was still active, I bought a very large number of specimens from the location, better than a thousand - which was a good thing since the area became off limits to colleting soon after). The Hyaline fluoresces a brilliant green under SW UV. On the other side of the specimen, Spessartine crystals have grown on light colored Micrcline crystals. The Spessartine crystals are a dark red/brown which is darker than usually seen. There are also two Smoky Quartz crystals present both of which are transparent and have Speesartine crystals both on the surface and incdluded within. This specimen was previously sold and recently repurchased as part of a collection.
Flaws: On the edge of the specimen, there is a broken off Smoky Quartz center.
