Mineral Specimen #985    Cristobalite with Fayalite

near Coso Junction, Inyo County, California, USA

SiO2 with Fe2+2SiO4

This is a form of Silicon Dioxide which forms at very high temperatures which are too high for Quartz to form. This is the same material which forms Snowlfake Obsidian. At this location, large, hollow nodules formed. Within the interior, can be found micro crystals of Fayalite (I can only find one in this specimen).
