Mineral Specimen #981    Multicolor Tourmaline (Elbaite)

Parelhas, Borborema mineral province, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil

This is a very unique Tourmaline specimen with an unusual color pattern from a part of Brazil from which Tourmaline specimens are seldom seen . The crystal is double terminated. One end is composed of many parallel, thin crystals which at first glance appear black. Under a strong light source, the color can be seen as a very dark, opaque purple. This abruptly transforms into clear material which is also structally different. The first color seen in the clear material is a purple which is followed by blue and which is then followed in turn by two shades of green. The second of the green colors is an olive color and runs most of the length of the crystal. Within the crystal, surrounded by this olive color is a pink core. At the other termination, the color changes to a teal or blue/green. This termination is also composed of multiple terminations but not as many nor as fine as the dark end. The specimen is in good condition. There are a couple of minor chips and some internal fractures perpendicular to the C axis which is common for Tourmaline and quite visible in the photos. Please note: these photos were taken with the specimen backlit; it is best displayed with good lighting.
