Mineral Specimen #963 Ruby Corundum
Cascade Canyon, San Gabriel Mts, Los Angeles Co., California, USA
This is something different, Ruby crystals from LA county. The location is in the mountains, just north of Claremont. This is a particularly large plate of this material. The Corundum ranges from pink to reddish purple with many of the crystals complete. Individual crystals range up to 7 mm. There are also four other unidentified minerals on this specimen. One is a mica which is present as small light brown crystals. There are also two green minerals; one a bright green and rather abundant and the other more an olive color, a bit glassy, and fairly scarce. There are also some micro, black, metallic crystals which appear to be Hematite. Only Corundum is listed for the location on mindat. I was told access to the location is quite difficult due to rough terrain.
