Mineral Specimen #946 Calcite pseudomorph after Ikaite
Carter Creek, North Slope Borough, Alaska, USA
Ikaite forms in either fresh or salt walter which is lacking oxygen and organicaly rich from glacial marine environments near the freezing point. It converts to calcite at higher temperatures. Specimens from this location were collected during oil exploration in the 1960s. Althoguh a rather crudely formed crystal, the edges are well defined. There is one section which seems to beeither a point of attachment or a break prior to the Calcite replacement. There is no appreciable damage to the specimen.
