Mineral Specimen #875 Rhodonite Crystal with Galena and Sphalerite
Broken Hill, Yancowinna Co., New South Wales, Australia
A good example of the gemmy Rhodonite this location is noted for; often considered the best quality for the species. This is truly classic material and likely mined 40 to 50 years ago. This specimen is gemmy with a rich, attractive red color. It is quite unusual to find a double terminated crystal (although one face on the larger termination is partially contacted). The terminations are rounded which is usual for the location. Although similar specimens are usually associated with Galena, this specimen also has some small, black Sphalerite crystals. There is also some clear to white colored material which appears to be Quartz which has a small patch of very micro Pyrite crystals on its surface. Overall the specimen is in fairly good condition with the exception of internal fractures and contact areas and minor wear.
