Mineral Specimen #767    Disc Shaped Tektite

Guangdong Province, China

This is quite an unusual shape for a Tektite; it is almost perfectly round. The current most widely accepted theory as to the origin of these Tektites which can be found scattered across southeast Asia, Australia, the Philippines and Micronesia is the following: The tektites formed from the melting and rapid cooling of terrestrial rocks that had been vaporized by a high energy impact of an asteroid. The extremely high temperatures and enormous pressures created clouds of molten silica droplets which cooled and fell back to earth.
