Central Mine, Keweenaw County, Michigan

This specimen reminds me of an ancient bird, something like Archaeopteryx. The crystals are well formed and the bird's head and beak are composed of one large crystal which is approximately 4.5 cm long. There are small blebs of native Silver scattered around the specimen, especially on the back of the head of the bird. The Silver is small and you need to look to find it. The specimen is in excellent condition with an old patina. The only problem is there are two small patches of glue on the bottom. This is were the specimen had been glued onto an oak plaque. This is how I originally found the specimen several years ago in a now closed rock shop in the Keweenaw. The specimen appeared to have been glued to the plaque quite some time ago as the wood was very dark and the glue very hardened. After removing as much of the glue as possible (it was not white glue and did not dissolve in water), the specimen was sold to George Katzmarek. George brought the specimen to the house this spring to be sold on consignment.
